A Review and A Case Collection on Terminal Lucidity
Terminal lucidity, the unexpected return of mental clarity and memory shortly before death in patients with severe psychiatric and neurological disorders, has been documented in medical literature for over 250 years but remains largely overlooked. In this review, we examine a variety of terminal lucidity cases to encourage further investigation into the underlying mechanisms and their potential implications for understanding memory and cognition at the end of life, as well as for advancing treatments for terminal illnesses. Reported cases include patients affected by brain abscesses, tumors, strokes, meningitis, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, and mood disorders. Notably, several accounts suggest that during episodes of terminal lucidity, cognitive and memory functions may operate through neurological processes distinct from those of the typical brain. We propose that in-depth study of terminal lucidity could yield valuable insights into memory and cognitive processing and inform the development of new therapeutic approaches. Additionally, greater awareness of these unusual end-of-life experiences may better equip physicians, caregivers, and bereaved families to recognize and cope with such events.
Raktapushpa: A Comprehensive Review of Its Phytochemistry and Therapeutic Potential
Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa Linn.), a well-known medicinal plant in traditional Ayurvedic systems, has gained significant attention for its wide range of pharmacological properties. This review compiles and evaluates the pharmacognostic characteristics and the diverse therapeutic bioactive compounds of Punarnava, highlighting its potential as a versatile herbal remedy. Pharmacognostically, Punarnava is identified by its spreading habit, thickened root system, and glandular hairy stems and leaves, with distinct macroscopic and microscopic features essential for proper identification and standardization of raw materials. Plant has demonstrated notable efficacy in managing liver disorders, edema, arthritis, and urinary tract infections in both experimental and clinical settings. This review also emphasizes the importance of standardization, quality control, and future research to explore the synergistic effects of these phytoconstituents and their potential for novel drug development. Comprehensive understanding and further exploration of its pharmacognostic and phytochemical profiles can pave the way for evidence-based applications in modern medicine.
Innovative Extraction and Isolation Techniques: A Review
Extraction and isolation techniques play a crucial role in obtaining bioactive compounds from natural sources. Traditional methods such as maceration and Soxhlet extraction, though effective, are often time-consuming and inefficient. Recent advancements have led to the development of innovative techniques such as Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE), Ultrasound- Assisted Extraction (UAE) and Pressurized Liquid Extraction (PLE), which improve yield, reduce solvent usage, and enhance selectivity. This review critically examines these modern techniques, comparing their efficiency, applications, and limitations. Additionally, the integration of green chemistry principles in extraction methods is discussed, emphasizing sustainability and environmental impact. The review concludes with future perspectives on emerging technologies in extraction and isolation, including automation and green solvents
